Acceptable use policy
Version 2 · effective 3 September 2026
In plain words
Do not record people without the consent your local law requires, and make sure it covers the recording being sent to a service. Do not resell the software or our cloud service, or use either to make content that is illegal or abusive.
1. Recording consent
How-To Maker turns screen recordings into tutorials. You are responsible for obtaining any consent required by the law that applies where you are before recording a screen, a voice, or a person. This obligation is yours and cannot be delegated to us.
2. Consent to send a recording to a service
Transcribing a recording sends the sound from it to whichever service you chose, which may be ours or one you hold your own account with. Where anyone other than you can be heard, the consent you needed to make the recording has to cover sending it to that service as well. If it does not, transcribe on your own machine instead, where nothing leaves it.
The same applies to what a transcript contains. Do not send us content you are not permitted to hand to a third party, including anything covered by a confidentiality obligation you have to somebody else.
3. The software
You may not resell, sublicense or redistribute How-To Maker, share your account with other people, circumvent the device limit, or reverse engineer the software except where the law expressly permits it.
4. Our cloud service
Our cloud transcription and tutorial writing exist to turn your own recordings into tutorials. You may not use them to generate content that is unlawful, that harasses or defames a person, that infringes someone else’s copyright, or that is designed to deceive. You may not resell access to them, or use them as a general purpose transcription or model API.
If what you want is a model for something else, the application can be pointed at a service you supply yourself, and that arrangement is between you and them.
5. Fair use of the service
Automated or scripted use that is not a person making tutorials, attempts to extract the underlying model, attempts to bypass metering, and attempts to work around the limits on upload size or on activated machines are all prohibited.
6. Enforcement
We may suspend an account that breaches this policy. Where a breach is plainly accidental we will tell you about it before doing anything else.
